    Hive Mind

Post  PhantomFE on Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:35 pm

I have come to the conclusion, that humans would be fucked if we were attacked by anything that is based around a hive mind government, aliens, animals, doesnt matter. we would be anally fucked.

Think about it, who are the hardest, and most feared type of enemy to fight in a game? Creatures that come from a hive minded society: the flood, the zerg, aliens, those things from Titan A.E. all hive mind. I think its because of the swarm. The never ending supply of enemies. The only way to hinder them, is to take out the queen figure, and after you do that, a new one is made and it starts all over again. meaning they can never truly be killed off.

The Hive mind is a very debatable form of intelligence with a lot of room for diversity since a true Hive mind system does not actually exist within Earth's ecosystem.

On one hand the ability to be the single mind and have 100% control over every creature in your race means you have guaranteed loyalty, direct control over the distribution of resources such as food, and are able to receive instantaneous intel from anywhere at any given time as long as even one creature is present.

The disadvantage, though, is that the mind is considered a weak point. Have 200 enemies and the mind in the middle. Shoot the mind and the 200 die instantaneously. In addition to that, one mind means the race is limited to one thought pattern and one creative process. Humans are so successful at War because we have multiple generals and multiple leaders who all perceive different things in different ways. If one general sees an obstacle as needing to be burned down, another general may have the insight to go around or chop it down instead, which may prove to be more effective. With the Hive Mind you only have the one mind and therefore only one idea at a time. This makes it slower to respond and slower to adaptation, which automatically gives the Independent species a huge advantage.

Sp the potential for greatness is there, but it also has the potential to be it's downfall as it was in Ender's Game and Mass Effect.

havent play mass effect, i actually just bought the first 2 god of war games.
Then the zerg are the best example of hive mind sociology. the overmind had cerebrates, who had overlords (and now overseers), causing a more independent type of thought process. so maybe not 100% hive mind type of thinking, but one of, if not the best race. Im trying to sound intelligent, but i think im failing...
